Kane has been well-known as a leader of the Made in America movement. United States manufacturing peeked in 1979, drifting down slowly over the next 20 years. In 2012, she went to the White House to attend US President Barack Obama’s “Insourcing American Jobs” summit. Later that year, she had a visit from US Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis, who took a tour of Kane’s headquarters in California. He wanted to learn more about the challenges of domestic apparel manufacturing in the United States. In 2011, 80% of Kane’s line was made in the United States, while 20% was imported from other nations. By the Spring of 2012, 90% was made in the USA. Karen Kane continues to manufacture most of her clothing and accessories in the United States (mainly in Southern California).
Karen’s story
Karen was born in Barberton, Ohio, a suburb of Akron, Ohio. Karen was the youngest of three children. When she was nine years old, her family moved from Ohio to Santa Barbara, California. She grew up sewing and taking as many fashion-associated classes as possible. Three months after her wedding, Karen and her husband, Lonnie, decided to start their own company. They started their business at home in their garage, which was also their first office, studio, and warehouse. The mission of their fledgling company was to make clothing with an excellent fit and feel, made from the best fabrics and the finest techniques possible. During the next few years, their family and company grew. What was once a husband-and-wife team is now a whole family business. Karen and Lonnie’s two sons, Michael and Robert, became part of the brand. Their addition brought new life and innovation to their business. Like all great things, Karen’s original vision had gradual changes with time, but Karen’s initial promise to make comfortable and beautiful clothes has never wavered. Kane lives in Los Angeles and runs her Karen Kane clothing company out of Vernon, California.
